What is Depth Enquiry?

Depth Enquiry is an approach to trauma therapy that builds on the principles of EMDR, working with aural bilateral stimulation. Aural bilateral stimulation is an integral part of the Depth Enquiry process, using alternating sounds to support the therapeutic process. You can have your eyes open or closed, allowing you to remain connected with your own internal experience throughout the process.

Depth Enquiry is a gentle, experiential and embodied approach to working with trauma, difficult experiences and the beliefs or patterns that can develop from them. It draws on evidence-based EMDR principles while retaining the holistic and relational foundations of Gestalt psychotherapy. Compared with EMDR, Depth Enquiry feels more more fluid, more embodied, more relaxed. Depth Enquiry can feel deeper and less clinical than EMDR because it is less interrupted and it lends itself more to a humanistic therapeutic setting.

Rather than moving quickly between different stages of a structured protocol, Depth Enquiry allows you to stay with your developing experience. We pay attention to what arises in your thoughts, feelings, memories and body sensations, allowing layers of experience to unfold and be explored.

The process is collaborative and responsive. Through bilateral sound, reflective listening and gentle enquiry, you are supported to notice and deepen into experiences that may previously have been difficult to access, put into words or fully process. Depth Enquiry may be helpful if you are experiencing the effects of trauma, distressing memories, recurring dreams or nightmares, anxiety, shame, negative beliefs or patterns that continue to affect how you feel, relate or respond in the present.

For some people, the use of auditory rather than visual bilateral stimulation may feel more comfortable or accessible than traditional EMDR. I offer Depth Enquiry as part of my broader Gestalt psychotherapy practice and as a stand alone approach, with sessions available in

Bellingen and Online across Australia.

What is Emotionally Focused Therapy?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence-based approach developed over several decades, rooted in Humanistic and Gestalt traditions and grounded in the science of Attachment Theory: the understanding that our need for safe, secure connection is fundamental to who we are.

EFT works by helping you identify the patterns that pull you and the people you love apart. Beneath conflict, withdrawal or disconnection, there is almost always an unmet emotional need - a fear of not being enough, of being abandoned, of not being truly seen. EFT creates the conditions to bring those deeper experiences into the open, so that real contact becomes possible again.

EFT is particularly powerful for couples, and is deeply valuable for individuals working through attachment wounds, relational trauma, or a recurring sense of disconnection from others, or from themselves.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy is available available in Bellingen and Online across Australia.
